NORTHPORT AREA HERITAGE ASSOCIATION
NORTHPORT, MI – Area history lovers are in for a double treat on Thursday, May 22, when Sharon McMachen Kalchik and Phyllis Kilcherman present a dual program on folk art for the monthly history presentation sponsored by the Northport Area Heritage Association. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Northport’s Trinity Church.
Kalchik, a fifth generation Leelanau Township resident, will have on display 30 folk art paintings she’s done and will talk about a selection of those paintings. Her art project began as a way to recapture local scenes as she remembered them to share with her grandchildren. She began by painting her memories of the farm south of Northport where she spent her growing up years. Since then she’s painted many more area scenes including her grandparent’s home, the old brick school, the village of Northport, Sleeping Bear, Peterson Park and has also painted, from the photos and memories of her mother and aunts, the school they attended on North Manitou Island.
For her segment of the program Kilcherman will talk about and display various types of folk art painting that was brought by the early families who settled in this area, including the various types of rosemaling popular in Scandinavian countries, two styles of folk painting from the Netherlands and folk art styles popular in Germany, Switzerland, England and early America.
The church is located at 103 N Warren Street. To get there from south of Northport, proceed north through the second blinking light to where Shabwasung Street ends at Nagonaba, turn left on Nagonaba and park in the visitor’s lot west of the church or on the street.. Enter the church through the doors on the west side, just off the parking lot. There is no charge for attending, but a free will offering will be taken.

ELK RAPIDS, KINGSLEY AND SUTTONS BAY JAZZ BAND
“BATTLE” AT NORTHPORT COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER
SUNDAY, MAY 18
NORTHPORT, MI – Three outstanding area high school jazz bands – Elk Rapids, Kingsley and Suttons Bay – perform in a Battle of the Bands on Sunday, May 18 at 8 p.m. at the Northport Community Arts Center.
Band members will spend the day in teaching rehearsals with Interlochen’s renowned Director of Jazz studies and saxophone teacher Bill Sears. At day’s end the bands concert goers will enjoy top-notch performances from these talented young musicians.
The Elk Rapids jazz band is led by David McKeon, Kingsley by Thomas Clair, and Suttons Bay by Anne Morey. Each band will perform separately on the evening program and Bill Sears will join them as a featured saxophone soloist. Band members promise a high energy, exciting performance as they do battle to be the best in this competition.

This is the second of eight concerts planned by the Northport Community Arts Center during 2008. Co-sponsors of the concert are Northern Lumber Company & Pro Hardware and The Business Helper, both in Suttons Bay.
