Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum is one of 12 lighthouses in the running for free windows and doors from the Jeld-Wen Window Company. We are the only Michigan lighthouse in the final 12. Locally, West Side Story is scheduled for eight performances between July 24 and August 3.. Presented by Theatre North TC, West Side Story recounts the rivalry between an Italian-American gang and a Puerto Rican gang in late 1950s New York. When the leader of the Italian-American gang falls in love with the sister of the leader of the rival gang, the stage is set for conflict and the dark theme of star crossed lovers. A cast of 30 talented actors and actresses, many of whom are students at area high schools and colleges, make the music and dance scenes come alive with youthful passion and enthusiasm. The sophisticated West Side Story score, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, include well known and loved tunes like “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “One Hand, One Heart” making West Side Story as beloved by audiences today as it was when first produced 51 years ago. Second Annual Northport Promise Pledge Picnic & Silent Auction
Noon – 3 PM, Sat., July 5 At Marina Park

Please join us for the annual Promise Pledge Picnic. Thanks to the entire community's generosity, the Promise provided seven graduates with $2,000 scholarships this year.

We'll have classic picnic fare for just $5 a plate for adults and kids over 5. It's free for kids 5 and under. There will be plenty of activities for kids.

Live music will be provided by local favorite North Bay Celtic.

The Elk Rapids jazz band is led by David McKeon, Kingsley jazz band by Thomas Clair, and the Suttons Bay jazz band by Anne Morey. Bill Sears, Interlochen’s renowned Director of Jazz studies and teacher of saxophone, will work with the bands during the afternoon. The three jazz bands will perform separately on the evening program and Bill Sears will join them as a featured saxophone soloist. You will love being a part of the excitement and high energy that can only come from our young high school musicians.

This film dates from the period when movie musicals “grew up” and became more than snippets of vaudeville. This one is a big-scale musical with stereotypes providing plot line and laughs between fantastic precision production numbers, including “The Words Are In My Heart” and classic Oscar-winning “Lullaby of Broadway” sung by Wini Shaw. Donations appreciated to cover expenses.

The men’s race is 109.5 miles and starts in Leland at 11:00 am. The women’s race is 69.5 miles and starts in Glen Arbor at 12:40 pm. The finish is at 3:30 pm at Peshawbestown.

Do you have an hour or two you could give? It’s time to get the school flowerbeds ready for Graduation (June 6) and summer. The old plants need to be trimmed and the weeds need to be pulled. Please consider working alone or gathering up a group of friends and enjoying the spring weather while you work.

The walking track and exercise equipment at Northport Public School is available for public use. One mile is equal to 14 times around the track plus another 30 feet. To get to the track, enter the school through the main front doors and turn right, proceeding to the first hallway. Then turn left going to the second door on the right for the stairway leading up to the track and exercise equipment. Use at your own risk.

FOLK ART TALKS PLANNED FOR MAY

NORTHPORT AREA HERITAGE ASSOCIATION

NORTHPORT, MI – Area history lovers are in for a double treat on Thursday, May 22, when Sharon McMachen Kalchik and Phyllis Kilcherman present a dual program on folk art for the monthly history presentation sponsored by the Northport Area Heritage Association. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Northport’s Trinity Church.

Kalchik, a fifth generation Leelanau Township resident, will have on display 30 folk art paintings she’s done and will talk about a selection of those paintings. Her art project began as a way to recapture local scenes as she remembered them to share with her grandchildren. She began by painting her memories of the farm south of Northport where she spent her growing up years. Since then she’s painted many more area scenes including her grandparent’s home, the old brick school, the village of Northport, Sleeping Bear, Peterson Park and has also painted, from the photos and memories of her mother and aunts, the school they attended on North Manitou Island.

For her segment of the program Kilcherman will talk about and display various types of folk art painting that was brought by the early families who settled in this area, including the various types of rosemaling popular in Scandinavian countries, two styles of folk painting from the Netherlands and folk art styles popular in Germany, Switzerland, England and early America.

The church is located at 103 N Warren Street. To get there from south of Northport, proceed north through the second blinking light to where Shabwasung Street ends at Nagonaba, turn left on Nagonaba and park in the visitor’s lot west of the church or on the street.. Enter the church through the doors on the west side, just off the parking lot. There is no charge for attending, but a free will offering will be taken.

ELK RAPIDS, KINGSLEY AND SUTTONS BAY JAZZ BAND

“BATTLE” AT NORTHPORT COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER

SUNDAY, MAY 18

NORTHPORT, MI – Three outstanding area high school jazz bands – Elk Rapids, Kingsley and Suttons Bay – perform in a Battle of the Bands on Sunday, May 18 at 8 p.m. at the Northport Community Arts Center.

Band members will spend the day in teaching rehearsals with Interlochen’s renowned Director of Jazz studies and saxophone teacher Bill Sears. At day’s end the bands concert goers will enjoy top-notch performances from these talented young musicians.

The Elk Rapids jazz band is led by David McKeon, Kingsley by Thomas Clair, and Suttons Bay by Anne Morey. Each band will perform separately on the evening program and Bill Sears will join them as a featured saxophone soloist. Band members promise a high energy, exciting performance as they do battle to be the best in this competition.

Tickets for this special event are just $15 for adults and $5 for grade school, middle school and high school students. They can be ordered by calling the NCAC at 231-386-5001 or online at www.northportcac.org.

A SUMMER OF MUSICALS SPECIAL MOVIE NIGHTS PLANNED AT NORTHPORT COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER SCHEDULE KICKS OFF WITH THAT'S DANCING ON THURSDAY, MAY 8 NORTHPORT, MI

The Northport Community Arts Center is planning to continue its The Flix series with A Summer of Musicals movie nights beginning Thursday, May 8 with the documentary film That's Dancing. Directed by Jack Haley Jr., That's Dancing features Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Bolger, Gene Kelly and Sammy Davis Jr. hosting segments of the film and also performing in various clips within the film. Liza Minnelli also hosts a segment of the film. That's Dancing is made up of clips from movie musicals from the late 20s to the break dancing craze of the mid 1980s, when the film was created. It's filled with clips from many of Hollywood's grand musicals featuring June Allyson, Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball, Jennifer Beals, Busby Berkley, James Cagney, Marge and Gower Champion, Leslie Caron, Cyd Charisse, Joan Crawford, Doris Day, Buddy Ebsen and many other entertainment legends.

Movies in the A Summer of Musicals series will be shown on the second and fourth Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m., during May, June, August and September

History of the Wolfe Family in Northport

Area native and local historian Avis Wolfe will talk about the history
of the Wolfe family at Northport's Trinity Church. The presentation
is sponsored by the Northport Area Heritage Association.

Wolfe, who grew up near Omena, has researched both her and her
husband's family histories as well as much Northport history. She'll
present brief biographies of the thirteen children of Payson and Mary
Jane Smith Wolfe, complete with photographs of them all. The
Smith/Wolfe family has a long history in Northport. Mary Jane Smith
Wolfe was the daughter of Rev. George N. Smith, one of the early
settlers.

SEASON KICK OFF CONCERT MAY 5, 2008

NORTHPORT, MI – The world renowned Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will kick
off the 2008 concert season for the Northport Community Arts Center on
May 5, 2008.

Led by internationally known band leader Buddy Morrow, one of the
world's all time great trombone players and a featured performer with
the great bands of the Big Band era, the orchestra retains the
authentic sound and style of the late Tommy Dorsey but is flexible
enough to incorporate other music into their repertoire. Concert
goers will enjoy original Dorsey classics as well as popular music
from Dixieland and rhythm and blues. Tickets for this special

NORTHPORT, MI – Members of the Northport Public School Honor Society have chosen the Northport Promise as the beneficiary of their annual fundraising dinner, planned Tuesday, March 18 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Northport School. Tickets for the event are $8 for adults and $5 for children

“The Honor Society decided to raise funds to help the Northport Promise this year,” said advisor Liz Lint. “Five members of the honor society are among the seniors who will benefit from The Northport Promise this year and the other members will be beneficiaries too as they graduate. The students wanted to be contributors to this terrific program.”

Students are planning a pasta dinner including a choice of Alfredo or marinara sauce, meatballs, salad, garlic bread and homemade desserts. The Northport Area Heritage Association (NAHA) will host a class on preserving photos and slides using computer equipment in the Northport Public School's computer lab. Al Noftz, a retired teacher and technology aficionado, will talk about ways to save and organize photos and slides, and available software, including free programs. Attendees will get hands-on experience and should bring a few photos to scan and work with. Additional classes will be on February 28 and March 27. NORTHPORT, MI – Northport resident Al Noftz will presents How to Scan, Organize and Use all Your Old Photographs and Slides on Thursday, January 31, 2008 as part of the Northport Area Heritage Association’s monthly program series.

Noftz, a retired teacher and technology aficionado, will talk about the easy and the difficult ways to save and organize prized historic photos and slides. The presentation will be at the Northport Public School computer lab at 7 p.m. The school is located

at 104 S. Wing Street. To get there turn left at the second blinking light in Northport and park in the visitor’s lot. Directional signs to the computer lab will be posted on the doors at the school.

In his presentation Noftz will focus on equipment, available software, especially free programs and will provide attendees with “hands on” experience at the computer. Kopple's style and knack for being unobtrusive lets the students and teachers tell the story about auditions, rehearsals, breaking down cliques and building friendships before they ultimately bring an adapted stage version of "High School Musical" to the school stage.

Disney Channel teamed with the non-profit NAMM Foundation to launch Disney's High School Musical School Grant Program, an initiative that allows for middle and high schools across the U.S. to apply for a grant to cover all licensing costs associated with producing their own in-school stage show, and to receive a cash grant that will help support additional teaching and production needs to enhance educational opportunities.

The Leelanau State Park (north of Northport) will host a Fall Harvest Festival as a "Go Get Outdoors" to encourage people to enjoy outdoor recreation. Activities include candle making, stories for children, and displays of beekeeping, fruit growing, maple syrup making and other agricultural and old-fashioned crafts. Weather permitting, the park staff will make old-fashioned ice cream to be served with Leelanau fruit topping. The Fox Island Lighthouse Association will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 9 am to noon ($7 for adults). The festival is free, but a motor vehicle permit is required to enter the park. NORTHPORT, MI – Classic picnic fare, a round robin tennis tournament, kid’s activities, music and a silent auction will be the featured activities at the first Promise Pledge Picnic, Saturday, August 18 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Braman Hill recreation area, west of Northport. The event will raise funds for the Northport Promise.

“This event is a great way to bring the community together to support the Northport Promise, learn more about it and find out ways to contribute either financially or by volunteering to help,” said Northport Promise Steering Committee Chair Sally Viskochil.

One of the fundraising highlights of the event will be a silent auction. “Donations are coming in every day,” says auction chair Beth Dickinson. “Well keep an updated list of all the donations on the Northport Promise web site and that will be updated daily.”

Donations include a wine and cheese sailboat cruise, a $250 gift certificate to the Inn at Black Star Farms, two hours of private tennis lessons from coach Dave Dickinson, a week at an Omena Point cottage, five two-hour sessions of millwork or repairs from Thomas Milliken Millwork with a total value of $750, paintings by local artists, a vineyard tour and sparkling wine tasting for six, and a half day fishing charter valued at $450.

Timber Shores Developer Pledges Nearly Quarter Million to Northport Promise

NM Investment Company, LLC (“NM”), of Royal Oak, Mich., the developer of the Timber Shores project near Northport, has pledged nearly $250,000 to the Northport Promise, officials of both groups announced today. As each of the units in the development is sold, NM will contribute $500 to the Northport Promise. With 494 units planned, the total amount donated will reach $247,000 when the project is fully sold.

“We are impressed with the renewed energy we see in the Northport area and we want to contribute to that as a vital part of the community,” said NM manager Fred Gordon. “We take seriously our responsibility to be a good corporate citizen. We think the Northport Promise has a great deal of potential for retaining local residents and attracting more permanent residents to this beautiful area along with businesses which can an exceptional educational opportunity for their employees’ children.”

The Northport Promise program is modeled after the successful Kalamazoo Promise announced in 2005. Students who attend Northport Public Schools throughout their primary and secondary education may receive full tuition to the Michigan public college, university or vocational school of their choice.

By The Bight Art Gallery and Studio – Thomas Bowker Stonecarving Demonstration and "New Sculpture in Stone: Peace Series" Show and Reception

Northport artist Thomas Bowker will be hosting a stonecarving demonstration on Saturday, July 28, 11am to 6pm at By The Bight Art Gallery and Studio of Northport. He will be hand-carving stone pieces and will share his personal methods for developing his sculpture 11:00am to 6pm.

Tom will also be featured in a special show and reception "New Sculpture In Stone: Peace Series". Tom's first experiences with carving were probably when he was about five – six years old. His mother would let him carve bars of soap. Some of the things he made were bears. Sometime later when he was in cub scouts about the age of seven or eight, he could remember carving circus animals. Later on, he took some of the bricks out of a neighbor's 150 year old house that needed repair, and carved soft bricks. Through high school most carving was in relief – wood and linoleum. In college he delved further into carving with limestone, and in graduate school he had opportunities to carve in alabaster and other materials.

He will be available to discuss his art and show you his most recent works. Refreshments will be served.

Northport Area Heritage Association Receives Grant Monies to be Used for Preservation

The Northport Area Heritage Association has received a grant of $1,500 from the Leelanau Township Community Foundation, Inc. to fund its Collections Care Program.

The grant will be used by the organization to preserve historical documents and artifacts stored at the association's museum, located in the historic Northport Depot. It will allow the group to purchase archival storage materials, including boxes and files, to preserve the many donations the association has received since its inception in 2004.

Northport Artist Earmarks Painting Sales Benefits Northport Promise Fundraising

Northport artist Helen Sica is donating the proceeds from the sale of her paintings on exhibit at This & That, 118 Main Street in Northport to the fundraising efforts of the Northport Promise.

Sica, a permanent resident of Northport since retiring 12 years ago, began painting shortly before retiring. After relocating permanently she began taking watercolor classes from artist Charles Murphy. Today, watercolor remains her preferred medium, although she works in many mediums. Sica, the grandmother of two Northport students, is best known for her landscapes, but also loves experimenting with various styles and recently began working on abstracts. During the off season she paints with the Tuesday morning group at the Old Art Building in Leland.

The idea to donate the money from her work started about two years ago. When the Northport Promise was announced she decided it would be her first choice for charitable donations from the sale of her work. Says Sica, "I love Northport and I wanted to do what I could to help Northport and the school grow and thrive."

That's a sentiment shared by This & That shop owner Denise Branch. "I've always loved art and I approached some local artists about putting their work in my shop. I was so excited when Helen told me where the proceeds from her sales should go." Branch, who is also the newly elected Northport School Board President, adds "I love the school – it's very important to the community and I've been so excited about the Northport Promise. It's really great to be able to help the fundraising effort in this way."

Local historian George W. Anderson, owner of the historic Northport Depot, will present a history of the building at the Northport Area Heritage Association's sixth program presentation, Thursday July 26 at 7 p.m. in the Depot

Anderson will discuss the early beginning of the railroad, it's expansion to the Upper Peninsula and the cargo brought to and shipped from Northport via rail. He'll also talk about the restaurant that once operated in the Depot and the Leelanau Transit Company that operated the railroad. By popular demand, this program is a repeat of Anderson's popular presentation this past February.

Gas station collectibles from the Marty Scott collection and photos of Mervau's Drugstore through the years are featured displays at the Northport Area Heritage Museum, which opened this month in new quarters at Northport's historic Depot building.
The museum also features historical information from Leelanau Memorial Hospital and the Leelanau Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, scrapbooks created by Northport native Norma Fredrickson Fretheim, old railroad pictures and a selection of black and white photos of local landmarks.

CAMPAIGN TO FUND COLLEGE TUITION

FOR GRADUATES BEGINS

Northport, MI – Funding that could allow Northport High School graduates to attend any public post-secondary educational institution in the state of Michigan tuition-free has moved several steps closer to reality with the formation of a steering committee to make the Northport Promise a reality for students attending Northport, Michigan’s K-12 program.

“With the promise of paid tuition for college courses or technical training for students who attend Northport schools for the full 13 years of their education and pro-rated tuition payments for those who are there for a portion of their educational career, we’re confident we can stop the declining enrollment in the Northport Public Schools and aid the school system in becoming the world class district it has the potential to be,” said Northport Promise organizer Sally Viskochil.

The Northport Promise steering committee recently began work on fund raising, criteria setting, an assessment of the endowment needed to fund the Northport Promise, an assessment of the number of additional students the Northport school can accept and developing communications about the Northport Promise to further its fund-raising efforts.

The group will be one of seven major community projects featured at the upcoming Northport-Omena Summit, scheduled for February 14, 2007 at 5 p.m at the Northport School Auditorium. There area residents will hear presentations by seven organizations that represent new initiatives or opportunities for the Northport-Omena area and have the opportunity to talk directly with those representatives at a post-presentation reception.

The Northport Promise steering committee, led by Viskochil, includes the following:

• Communications and Public Relations: Lisa Drummond, Kristi Fischer, Irene Huck, Elaine Stuckey, Ruth and Scott Walker.
• Fundraising: Beth and Dave Dickinson, Rick Huck, Aaron and Kathy Sahs.

It is credited with increasing enrollments by 1,000 students this year after several years of losing 250 students per year. Ninety percent of Kalamazoo’s 2006 graduating class went on to college, up from 78% of the previous year’s graduates.

Northport artist Thomas Bowker recently had his art work, Captain Billy-Bob with His Treasured Chest, juried into Sculpture Key West: by land, sea and sky, an annual, international juried exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculpture set in Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, Key West, Florida. This nationally recognized exhibition showcases international and world class artists and is viewed by collectors, art patrons and over 100,000 visitors to the park. The 87-acre Park is home to a civil war era fort surrounded by a moat and includes the island’s best beaches, and open field and wooded areas. Every winter the park becomes home to an exhibition of large-scale sculptures, many of them created specifically for the site by leading sculptors from around the world. What is unique about Sculpture Key West is that its outdoor venue can be seen by land, sea and sky. Many artists take advantage of this unique venue to showcase work that can be viewed from a variety of vantage points. The Park is situated on the southernmost tip of Key West where the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico meet, offering a variety of settings for contemporary sculpture.

Captain Billy-Bob with His Treasured Chest is a mixed media sculpture standing 74” tall. MLAP nets grants

To lighthouses in area get funds

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse will receive a $40,000 grant from funds raised for the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program through sales of "Save Our Lighthouses," state license plates. The money will be used to repair water damage and foundation problems in the historic structure, located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.

TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan lighthouses, including two in northern Michigan, will receive $233,300 in preservation grants this year from proceeds of a state license plate project that directs money to the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program.

Funds from "Save our Lighthouses” will be distributed to eight organizations and local governments around Michigan that provide upkeep for the state's historic lighthouses.

"This is the only source of funds that's specifically used for the lighthouses,” said Brian Conway, a state historical preservation officer. "So it's through this fund that we are able to assist the nonprofit organizations and government entities that are the new stewards for the preservation of the lighthouses.”

The Grand Traverse Light Station and Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse will receive funding.

A $40,000 grant to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum will be used to repair lighthouse water damage.

"We have a major foundation problem,” said Stefanie Staley, museum executive director. "What has been happening over the last 150 years is that moisture has been coming through the foundation and we now have to run dehumidifiers (continually).”

Repair estimates are at $70,000, Staley said. The grant money will allow workers to stabilize beams that are in danger of pulling away from the building.

"Having those extra $40,000 for this project will keep the building from falling down in the future,” Staley said.

The Charlevoix Historical Society will use its $34,000 grant to waterproof South Pier Lighthouse to fend off deterioration. It's the first of four phases the society hopes to complete over the next several years.

"Basically we want to stabilize the lighthouse, that's what phase one is about,” said Mary Adams, restoration committee chair.

"And then phase two is restoration, as (are) phase three and phase four.”

Several improvements are in store over the full project, including removal of lead-based paint, repair of the original fog horn, and replacements of brass ventilators and electrical equipment.

Since the assistance program began in 2000, more than $985,000 has been distributed to lighthouses around the state.

The nonprofit Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum is working to raise money to repair damage to the lighthouse's foundation. It has until Aug. 1 to match a grant from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program. NORTHPORT — The Grand Traverse Lighthouse has stood strong since 1858 at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.

But like all old houses, it needs repairs.

The restored nautical beacon — a popular visitor attraction in Northport — houses a museum featuring exhibits about local lighthouse history, foghorns and shipwrecks. During the last 20 years, community donations helped open the museum, upgrade electrical wiring and restore the lighthouse and fog-signal building.

A structural assessment several years ago, however, revealed moisture accumulations within the lighthouse's stone foundation that led to deterioration of many floor joists.

Stefanie Staley, executive director of the nonprofit museum, said the damage must be repaired sooner, rather than later.

"If you look at some of the beams you can stick a knife through them," she said.

Assessments from two architects estimate that correcting the problem and repairing damage will cost about $45,000, and could exceed that depending on results of a more thorough assessment after work begins.

Lighthouse supporters recently launched a fundraising drive to pay for foundation restoration that includes joist replacement and exterior waterproofing, as well as a perimeter drain to route water away from the building.

The museum is seeking a grant from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program, and local matching funds are required to receive state funding. The organization so far has gathered $10,000 of a required $20,000 match that must be raised before the Aug. 1 application deadline. The $10,000 tally includes a recent $7,500 award from the Les and Anne Biederman Foundation.

Several upcoming events, including an Aug. 17 lobster dinner fundraiser, are scheduled to kick-start the capital drive.

Staley said she's confident the community will lend its support.

"Even if it's $5, every dollar will help us get to that point," she said.

The state of Michigan owns the lighthouse and leases it to the museum. Staley said the museum hopes to begin foundation repairs in the spring.

Dinners are $14, which include fresh Michigan whitefish, red skin potatoes, onions, coleslaw, cherry pie, and a beverage. For children 12 and under, hot dog plates will be available for $5.00. The plate includes a hot dog, chips, coleslaw, cherry pie, and a beverage.

Haserot Park provides an ideal setting for this popular Northport tradition. Locals and visitors will welcome the memories and the flavors of the fresh Michigan whitefish served with potatoes and onions smothered in butter. Anyone who has ever attended this delectable event knows that it truly encompasses the spirit of northern Michigan and the Northport community. The event brings all ages together for a day of fabulous food and fun at one of the most beautiful parks on Grand Traverse Bay in the heart of the Village of Northport.
